About Us
The Himalayan Children Education project was created in 2017 by Tsoknyi Rinpoche, to support young children from remote areas in the Himalayas, access education to broaden their opportunities and drive social changes in their communities.
The project currently offers students who have graduated Class 5 at the primary school in Sama village in Nubri, the opportunity to attend good quality second level schools in Kathmandu. Our wish is to continue to support them with further education.
We keep the connection with their Himalayan culture and traditions. The schools we have selected and the extracurricular activities we organize outside the classes ensure that the students remain connected to their Himalayan roots.

The Transformational Power Of Education

In remote villages of the Himalayas, children possess inner happiness and contentment but life can sometimes be quite tough and their childhood short. Most families struggle and live from hand to mouth. Children are bound to work in fields, farming from dawn to dusk. Children who grow up in poverty often lack proper health care, nutrition and hygiene, as well as knowledge about reproductive health and treatable diseases. They are also more likely to be exposed to domestic violence due to financial struggles in the family. Poverty and family tensions compromise children’s physical and mental development, and undermine their confidence in the future.
When Children Get A Chance To Access Education,
What Happens When They Grow Up?
The transformational power of education ensures a better life for these children, their families and their communities. Having the opportunity to go to school changes their whole life and eventually can break the generational cycle of poverty. Education is the best way to help remote Himalayan areas prosper and develop in a genuinely sustainable way.
More About Nubri And Schooling At Sama Village

All the children that we currently support come from Sama, a village located in Nubri, part of Ghorka district. Nubri lies in the high Himalayas of northern Nepal, very near to the border of Tibet, at an altitude of 3600 meters. This area is very remote and is a seven-day walk from the nearest road.
Most people in Nubri survive on subsistence farming, animal herding, and picking wild herbal medicines. In recent years, the Manaslu trekking route has become popular among trekkers and nature lovers allowing some residents in the Nubri valley to set up lodges to accommodate trekkers and earn a living from touristic activity. The Nubri valley possesses an astonishing untouched beauty and is blessed by the Dharma.

Kindergarten And Primary School At Sama Village
In 2020, Mingyur Rinpoche started a kindergarten at Sama village with the help of kind donors. The kindergarten has opened its doors to all young children of the village in 2020.

After kindergarten, children join the Sama village school.
The Sama Council, with the Nepali Government, and the support of Ula Jigme and NGO’s, founded the Gauri Shankar Primary School in 2005.

The Gauri Shankar Primary School goes up to Class 5. There is no higher educational opportunities in Sama area, and parents often can’t afford to send their children to boarding school.
The Himalayan Children Education project offers all Gauri Shankar graduates scholarships to good quality second level boarding schools in Kathmandu.
